Preconceptional Counselling:

Counselling of couples prior to conception to ensure healthy pregnancy outcomes.

It is of utmost importance for both the partners to be of optimum health prior to planning a pregnancy. Hence, it is important for the early detection of any health condition that is detrimental to healthy pregnancy.

Family history of genetic/metabolic illnesses may impact the health of the future baby and mother, thus warranting a preconceptional counselling.

Correction of common problems like anemia, blood pressure, deranged blood sugars, hypertension, malnutrition is a part of pre conceptional counselling.

De-addiction is a part of prenantal counselling. Substance abuse (smoking, alcoholism) can harm the growth and development of the future baby.

Pregnancy Care:

A smoothly sailing 9 months of pregnancy can be achieved with a little aid from your obstetrician.

Pregnancy or antenatal care encompasses all aspects of pregnancy from the time of its detection till delivery.

Antenatal care starts with early registration of the pregnancy at the nearest healthcare centre.

Pregnancy supplements including Iron/folic acid, vaccination during pregnancy (tetanus toxoid), antenatal excercises, ensuring an optimum growth of the fetus inside the womb, detecting the possibility of congenital malformations in the baby, etc, are all a part of antenantal care.

Early detection and categorizing patients into normal and high risk pregnancy can help deal with the lumpy bumpy pregnancy course.

High risk pregnancies require special care, eg. Hypertension in pregnancy, diabetes in pregnancy, anemia in pregnancy, heart disease in pregnancy, thyroid disease and pregnancy, multifetal pregnancies (twins, triplets), pregnancies in the extremes of age groups ( teenage and elderly) and pregnancies after previous fetal losses, pregnancies after infertility treatments.

Labour and delivery:

Labour pain is ranked high on the pain rating scale when compared to other painful life conditions.

It is an obstetrician’s ultimate goal to have a healthy mother and baby at the end of pregnancy and labour. Thus, an obstetrician’s duty is to ensure a delivery which causes minimal discomfort to the patient. An obstetrician should be of sound mind and know when and how to intervene, in the form of assisted vaginal deliveries (forceps and vacuum delivery) and Caesarian section.

Post natal care:

Post natal care is defined as a care given to the mother and her newborn baby immediately after the birth of the placenta and for the first six weeks of life. Majority of maternal and neonatal deaths occur during childbirth and the postpartum period.

Scaling up of maternal and newborn health through proper postnatal care services is the best way of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.

Ensuring emotional well-being, Infant care, lactation and feeding, addressing maternal issues of Sleep and fatigue, contraception, sexuality and birth spacing, and ensuring Physical recovery from birth and return back to a healthy pre-pregnant state are all a part of postnatal care
